Marine Biology Fieldwork and Adventure Sports

On Ysgol y Môr’s EPQ course, students can plan, reseach and write their own extended project on a marine biology topic of their choice.
This unique course allows students to focus on their extended project and choose a topic of interest to them. It is designed and led by experienced biology teachers who have extensive experience of supervising extended projects and essays.
Once decided on a research topic, students will spend over 12 hours undertaking coastal fieldwork within the unique environment of the Menai Strait. This fieldwork will be supported and facilitated by the marine biologists at Sw Môr Môn (Anglesey Sea Zoo), who have immense local knowledge and experience. The challenges faced by this fragile marine environment will provide insight into scientific issues and ideas that have both local and global significance.
Fieldwork sessions are spent on the water and the shoreline of the Strait, as well as studying marine life within the aquarium itself. This is an invaluable opportunity to conduct a significant piece of independent research, whilst enjoying a unique learning experience. The course enables students to conduct an autonomous and original piece of work. Read more about the fieldwork opportunities.
Mentoring & Seminars
With up to 24 hours guided study time and eight hours timetabled time for rest and reflection, the programme gives the learner the time and facilities to develop their project to the highest standards. Students will aim to complete a near final draft of their extended project by the end of the week.
Plas Menai is the ideal studying environment in which to develop the project with excellent classroom and learning facilities. Students benefit from interaction with other learners, support from our experienced teaching team and the space to think and reflect upon learning.
Seminars will cover:
- essay writing skills (including research techniques, structuring, editing, formatting, citations and referencing)
- presentation skills
- independent study
- time management
A report on the authenticity of the student’s research and engagement in the process will be provided for the EPQ supervisor on return to school.
It is not all about the work – watersports and a powerboat adventure are a big part of the week. Our base for the course, the prestigious National Outdoor Centre at Plas Menai, is one of the best training centres in the UK for students to try their hand at sailing and coasteering.
The sea cliffs, crags, ship wrecks and uninhabited islands of Anglesey are home to an abundance of marine life, sea birds and history which you’ll be able to see close up on a powerboat tour of this fascinating coastline.
See our Activities for more details. Students can also enjoy the heated indoor swimming pool during their stay at Plas Menai.
