Fieldwork Technique and Support

Students have an amazing opportunity to get “up to their knees” in the natural world on the Extended Essay and EPQ courses. They will be coached in the techniques essential to providing good data for their individual, original piece of research.
Out of classroom learning engenders enthusiasm and understanding. Students will have the chance to experience a range of practical techniques and be introduced to new environments on the Menai Strait, gaining experience they may not get during their studies.
For biotic factors, this could include:
- - point quadrats, line transects or belt transects on: rocky shores, salt marsh, sandy beach, muddy beach, fresh water marine environments
- - mark-release-recapture
- - kick sampling
- - seine netting
- - water sampling
- - plankton sampling
Experts and dichotomous keys will be available to help students identify organisms on site.
For abiotic factors:
- - water velocity tests
- - water temperature
- - water oxygen levels
- - water nutrient levels
- - light levels are 24-hour cycle
- - macro pollution levels
- - large marine plastic levels
Throughout the course, students will have access to:
- - Marine biology experts from the Anglesey Sea Zoo
- - Ysgol y Môr IB and A Level teachers
- - Well equipped base for processing field data
- - Laboratory for identifying small organisms
- - Relevant texts and journals
Students will have help in collating and processing their data using everything from simple handwritten tables through to complex spreadsheets. Good research needs robust data and students will be supported in their data analysis by our marine biology experts.
Writing an academic article for the first time can be challenging, even for those who are passionate about a subject. As the extended essay is a central part of the IB programme and the EPQ is increasingly important to universities, this challenge can be quite daunting. Nothing can beat working alongside experts and stepping out of your normal environment. Immersing yourself in the extended project or essay for a week can bring great clarity to the process.
Our tutors can help you take your original research and conclusions, converting these into a robust document. Our aim is for each student to finish their week at Ysgol y Môr with a near complete extended essay or extended project to finalise with their supervisor back at school.
